Fire destroys factory

MORE than 35 firefighters battled the blaze at Caines Jannif warehouse building along Carpenters St in Raiwai, Suva, yesterday afternoon.

The fire destroyed two adjoining buildings belonging to Caines Jannif and Tissue Manufacturers.

National Fire Authority chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai said they tried their best to prevent the fire from destroying the whole building, but the direction of the wind made it difficult.

"Because of the wind direction, we found it hard to prevent the building from totally getting damaged," Mr Moceitai said.

He said they were lucky enough to stop the fire from spreading to other buildings close by.

"The only objective at that time was to prevent the fire from getting to other nearby buildings."

The Suva fire team was supported by Valelevu and Nausori fire teams who were all deployed to the site, particularly given the high level of economic activities in that vicinity.

Mr Moceitai confirmed there were no staff members in the building at the time of their arrival.

"We are very grateful with police for being here and helped to control bystanders who were trying to cross over to look at the fire.

"The building has been completely destroyed, but we cannot confirm the cause of the fire as we have to carry out an investigation."

A witness said they had finished lunch when they saw black smoke coming out from behind the building.

"Our office is just beside it. We had completed lunch when we saw the smoke and when we ran in it was already burning," he said.

Caines Jannif Ltd chief executive officer Iqbal Jannif said it was too early to estimate the cost of damage.
