Money laundering case

THE High Court in Lautoka has granted appeal to a man jailed for three years for money laundering last year.

Prashil Prakash was charged with two counts of money laundering and after trial at the Nadi Magistrates Court, was convicted of only one charge.

During his appeal hearing, High Court judge Justice Daniel Goundar said it was alleged the appellant received $350 — knowing or ought to have reasonably known — that the money had been derived directly or indirectly from some form of unlawful activity.

Former cop jailed for rape

A FORMER policeman has been sentenced to eight years behind bars after being found guilty of rape.

Viliame Waqanivatu, 40, was convicted of one count of rape and one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The incident occurred on October 27, 2012, when the accused was a police officer at the time.

High Court in Lautoka judge Justice Paul Madigan told the court that Waqanivatu met the complainant at a Nadi nightclub and persuaded her to go with him to his quarters at Namaka Police Station on the pretext of getting more money.
