FRA submits report on irresponsible loggers

THE Fiji Roads Authority has submitted a report to the Ministry of Forests on loggers who have breached their permit conditions by carting logs during adverse weather.

A statement from the authority's general manager network operations and maintenance, Aram Goes, said the ministry was responsible for ensuring logging operations complied with conditions of the permit.

Mr Goes said the FRA was trying to restore emergency access for buses.

"In the long term we have major gravel layers programed with drainage works on approximately 10km of this 30km long route," Mr Goes said.

"This is more likely to start from August 2018 in readiness for the following wet season.

"Similar major unsealed road upgrading of 34km is currently underway between Nabouwalu and Kubulau to connect bus services through to Wailevu West.

"This 34km of gravel strengthening includes a total of 6km of sealing in front of schools, health centres and villages along this route, together with sealing of several steep inclines for improved traction.

"We remind anyone who sees overloaded vehicles, or carting of loads on gravel roads during wet weather, to report it to the LTA, police or FRA so appropriate action can be taken to protect access for the general public."

Mr Goes said the actions of a selfish few who were making a profit at the expense of the hard working taxpayers affected access that is preventing children from getting to schools, elderly and sick to reach health centres and people to their places of work.

"It is also costing Government and taxpayers additional expenses to carry out extra repairs caused by these loggers," he said.
