Differences in boundary maps

WORK on the review of Fiji Pine Ltd's lease boundaries will be a continuous exercise by the Ministry of Forests, the company, iTaukei Land Trust Board and landowners.

Minister for Forests Osea Naiqamu told pine landowners in Bua last week there were differences in boundary maps owned by TLTB and FPL.

Mr Naiqamu said the two entities were given time last year to look into the differences and reconcile them for the sake of pine landowners.

"That work is still continuing and it will continue depending on complaints received from landowners," he said.

"This week (last week) we again heard complaints from landowners in Bua Lomanikoro who claim that FPL had overplanted their trees on their reserved land.

"These complaints have been noted and given to the two bodies so that they can determine the truth of the claims.

"If it has been established that reserved land has been overplanted and not leased by FPL, the lands will be returned to landowners."

Meanwhile in September last year, Fiji Pine Ltd general manager operations Asesela Cokanacagi clarified to this newspaper that TLTB and FPL would formalise that the company be in charge of the return of overplanted pine land.

Mr Cokanacagi said then that overplanted land referred to land outside lease boundaries where Fiji Pine Ltd had planted pine.

Mr Cokanacagi had said there were various reasons for overplanting, one of them being — planting carried out by contractors at that time were not monitored well.

He also said they were aware there were pine trees belonging to the company that had been planted outside the company's lease boundary.
