Update: 2:15PM A TOTAL of 200 white canes worth FJ$11,000 were today distributed in Suva by the Australian government to members of the visually impaired community.

Australia's high commissioner to Fiji John Feakes said the donation, which came from its "Walk with confidence program" was designed to provide independence.

"These canes will support the independence, comfort and safety of blind children and people in Fiji. So, it is fully designed to provide them with more independence to go about their everyday life," he said.

Mr Feakes said working with the disabled community was a key part of Australian diplomacy in Fiji.

Out of the 200 white canes given, 50 white canes are for children and 150 are adult canes.

Representatives from the Fiji Society for the Blind said they would distributed the canes to schools and villages.
