SURFERS Mat Gabel and Kiesha Wakeham won the top honours at the 7th annual Craig McElrath Memorial Longboard surfing event held at Swimming Pools, off Namotu Island.

"The group of 34 surfers were greeted by clean one metre to 1.2 metres waves.

"We used a totally different format the surfers shared the waves together in an expression session of their surfing skills, their surfing etiquette and surfing stoke."

Portingale said all the profits from the event would proceed to the Craig McElrath Foundation to support their work in skin cancer research and support.

"With ages ranging from nine through to 60 the differences in everyone's style was amazing and we were treated to the "dying cockroach" manoeuvre by Mat Gabel," he said.

"Mat won the most entering move taking home a carton of beer. Best surfing award went to 11-year-old Kiesha Wakeham rewarding her stylish surfing.

"Also taking home a reward was Malia Johnson, Rob Cribb and Ian Muller who all showed plenty of Bula stoke."
