ACCESS to quality education, high quality teaching and strengthened education management systems were among the objectives highlighted in the Nadi Declaration at the 20th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers meeting which was held last week.

Meeting chairperson Attorney-General and Education Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said the partnership approach undertaken by participants would ensure meeting outcomes would be achieved.

"The Nadi Declaration will be able to demonstrate that we have some very good objectives and some may say ambitious and yet achievable objectives," the A-G said.

"We believe that by taking the Commonwealth family approach — working through the Secretary-General and her team — that we will be able to provide a heightened level of collaboration and ultimately deliver to our people in our respective countries."

The Nadi Declaration delivered a significant number of outcomes, however, key objectives were focused on improved quality, better teachers and more effective management.

"Ministers emphasised the need to prioritise and expand access to quality education for children, regardless of circumstances, to master basic numeracy and literacy skills," the declaration said.

"Ministers agreed that high quality teaching is a priority and that member states should focus on how teachers and school leaders are trained, recruited and motivated and how the profession is governed.

"Ministers recognised the need to strengthen education management systems.

"They agreed to collect and use accurate, timely and relevant data to assure quality and evaluate results against targets.

"This will allow evidence-based interventions within the education system, improve accountability and support global efforts to enhance the quality and use of educational data."
