Heavy rain and flash flooding alert

PEOPLE living in low-lying areas on Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands and Lau and Lomaiviti groups were urged to prepare themselves for the possibility of flash floods.

The Fiji Meteorological Service issued a heavy rain alert at 5pm yesterday and also warned that an expected King Tide could increase the possibility of flash floods.

The weather office said the alert was expected to be upgraded to a heavy rain warning within six to 12 hours of the bulletin being issued.

The expected heavy rain was caused by a low pressure system with associated cloud rain and thunderstorms.

"There is high chance of rainfall exceeding 100mm in 24 hours especially in areas of localised and frequent heavy rain," said FMS.

"There is also high risk of flash flooding and flooding of low-lying areas. "It is noted that the King Tide of more than two metres is predicted this week, which further elevates the risk of flooding of low-lying areas and catchment level because of back flow of water given that rain is predicted to for most parts of the country."
