PM praises China support

GOVERNMENT has commended the Chinese Government's $100,000 contribution in disaster relief assistance to people affected by Severe Tropical Cyclone Gita in the southern Lau Group.

Speaking at the handover ceremony of the China-Aid vehicle project at the Police Special Response Unit in Makoi, Nasinu recently, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said the country was forever grateful to the People's Republic of China for their endless support.

"By way of an update, our Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) engineers have carried out their disaster relief assessment and we have emergency personnel on the ground in affected areas distributing relief supplies and helping those communities get back on their feet," Mr Bainimarama said.

"The reality we face in Fiji is that some Fijians are separated by great physical distances, and that is why my Government has made special efforts to bring services, infrastructure and development to all of our people, everywhere in Fiji.

"We will not allow these communities in rural pockets of the country to languish on the sidelines of our economic development."

Mr Bainimarama said rural communities needed to be a part of Fiji's progress, contributing to Fiji's development and prosperity.

"And on the back of eight straight years of economic growth, my Government has carried out a program of rural outreach that has brought unimaginable levels of opportunity to Fijians in some of the most remote corners of our country," he said.

"We've vastly expanded access to water, electricity and telecommunications, giving tens of thousands of Fijians a critical foundation of development so they need no longer worry about providing themselves and their families with these essential services.

"We are opening new local government offices bringing medical, educational, legal and other essential government services to the doorsteps of communities in remote parts of the country."
