Report to determine next course of action

DAMAGE assessment reports by government teams that toured the southern Lau Group will determine the next course of action in terms of assistance for the people of Ono-i-Lau, Vatoa, Fulaga and Ogea, says Lau provincial administrator Eliki Masa.

A 104-member government assessment team returned last Saturday after spending six days inspecting islands affected by Severe Tropical Cyclone Gita.

Mr Masa said the second phase of assistance would be determined once damage assessment reports were submitted to the National Disaster Management Office permanent secretary Meleti Bainimarama. He said the Agriculture Ministry officials who visited farms said food sources were severely affected on Ono-i-Lau.

The team dropped off food rations for a month on Ono-i-Lau and for four villages located on the island.

"For Vatoa, Fulaga and Ogea, there weren't any damage recorded for farms as well as infrastructure," Mr Masa said.
