Flood hinders development

FLOODING in Tavua is an issue that hinders development for the town, says Tui Tavua Ratu Nacanieli Kuwa.

He said works were being carried out near the town.

"It (Tavua) is a waterlogged area and we know that it has been an issue for several years," he said.

"There is constant flooding in certain areas, but there are efforts being done to address this, like plans to have the Nasivi River dredged.

"I think that is a welcomed development, especially for those living in flood-prone areas near the town."

He said there was also potential to develop Vatia, which had been identified as a possible tourist hotspot.

"We want to develop Vatia for our tourism market. But we still have the problem of flooding and that also happens in Vatia," he said.

"So we signed a contract with a Chinese company that will help us dredge the Vatia River and we are opening up the area and have proper roads installed to develop this place in a tourism centre."
