IT boost for police

THE conduct of police investigators during the interview of suspects will be clear and transparent with the introduction of new technology, says Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Itendra Nair.

He made the comment during the opening of a four-day video interviewing course for police officers last week.

Mr Nair said with the introduction of video interviews, issues would be minimised.

"The best way to minimise the risk to our investigations will be through the use of the video recording rooms which we are trying our best with our stakeholders to introduce this initiative and to see how we can facilitate procurement of the equipment for the other divisions," Mr Nair said.

He said the use of a video interviewing room was to protect the integrity of the investigation process and equally as important, the investigators.

The training was facilitated by the UNDP, the Government of the UK and other stakeholders include the Legal Aid Commission and the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission.

Mr Nair also stressed that the Fiji Police Force was trying to operate in a transparent manner and the use of video recordings would show how a suspect was treated and questioned in the presence of an investigator.

He said the main outcome was to ensure cases were successfully prosecuted in court.

The 20 participants of the training were made up of officers from the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters and representatives from the Western and Northern divisions.

At present, video interviews are only conducted at CID Headquarters in Toorak and at the Totogo Police Station, Suva.
