BIOSECURITY Authority of Fiji CEO Hillary Kumwenda has acknowledged the quick action of his Lautoka team in uncovering a potential risk on board a vessel bringing in vehicles from Japan.

The BAF team intercepted dead specimens of the exotic brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) on the MV Pacific Islander last Thursday.

BMSB is a major threat to agriculture as it feeds on a wide variety of plants, including fruit trees, crops such as beans, corn and tomato and many other ornamental plants and weeds.

BMSB can also infest human dwellings in large numbers making them a public nuisance.

The vessel had called into Noumea, New Caledonia first before heading to Fiji and BAF was on high alert after BMSB were detected on the car carrier Morning Menad, which also brought in a mix of new and used vehicles from Japan to the Suva wharf last Saturday.

Mr Kumwenda said BAF inspectors were well informed about the BMSB menace and were doubling efforts at the borders to protect the country.
