Thank you Attorney-General and Minister for Education Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for focusing on our teachers during your speech at the 20th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (FT 20/2).

Yes, they have an essential role to empower and forge the minds of our students and young people.

And yes, they have to remain motivated, engaged and well qualified.

May I suggest that teachers go back for refresher courses and upskil themselves. Remember they are the very people who are tasked to develop future leaders.

Anyway, now that corporal punishment has been banned, what has been put in place to counter this so that discipline is maintained?

Remember teachers are human beings and some children can be downright obnoxious. So let's balance the equation of children's rights and teachers' rights.

A word to teachers, you are the adult in the classroom and you have authority over the students.

Be fair, be firm and be a good educator.

Hone your skills so that when your students move on in life you can smile and be proud when you see them become successful in life.

And I commend the Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers.
