We remember them

Dharmendra Kumar, Rewa Street, Suva

I believe the tears, suffering and the struggles of Indians during the indenture system must never be forgotten.

While assisting my daughter revise her social science using the text Fiji in the Pacific, a particular portion of the article caught my attention.

For an Indian to cast their vote the following were the requirements: "An Indian had to be of Indian parentage, a British subject, able to read and write and own or lease property worth five pounds a year (or earn 75 pound a year).

We are no doubt the fortunate generation but we owe it to our forefathers.

A dream doesn't become a reality through magic. It takes sweat, determination and hard work.
