SAKEASI Mawi of Tovata House jumped a distance of 6 metres to win gold in the inter-boys long jump event during the Queen Victoria School athletics inter-house competition at the Matavatucou ground in Tailevu yesterday.

Mawi jumped a distance of 5:66m in his first attempt and 5:76m in his second attempt.

The Cicia, Lau lad hopes to break a record in the inter-boys event at this year's Coca-Cola Games.

"I just joined QVS this year and what motivated me to take part in the long jump is the house spirit and support from our parents," he said.

"Coming to QVS was a good platform me to enhance my knowledge academically and further my training in sports.

"Balancing training and studying is quite tough, but with the support from my fellow teammates, we will be able to achieve our ultimate goal and that is to pass and also be successful in the sports arena."

The 18-year-old said he had a tough competition from his fellow teammates.

"We have good jumpers like Kalivati Vesilevu, Filipe Senibua and Josua Matanainoke who were all coming closely behind me, but I didn't give up and kept pushing myself to jump much higher."

QVS will participate in the Tailevu Zone where they will compete with rivals RKS for the top spot.
