Youths promote clean, healthy environment

MAI vei au support group (MVASG), an inter-religious, multi-ethnic and family-based community group in Lami will be conducting its clean-up campaign today to promote a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone.

MVASG president Asaeli Naisoro said the move was an act of community resilience and responsible stewardship towards their environment.

"MVASG will be engaged in a seafront clean-up campaign titled 'Lami Town CBD seafront baseline and foreshore clean-up campaign'," Mr Naisoro said.

"The total distance we would be covering is around 761.43m or little more than 0.75km and we expect around 200 youths and adults to be involved in this worthwhile cause.

"The initiative supports the Government's call of ensuring a clean Fiji."

Mr Naisoro said the participants would include Lami Catholic Youth Group, Wesley Methodist Church at Lami, the Nakula Methodist Church, families at the Lami Police Station and families of members of the MVASG.

"Challenged by the continuing climate change issues, MVASG adopts the campaign in its contribution towards resilience initiatives in mobilising the community to take ownership of the public space as a step towards smart environment stewardship," he said.

"All relevant approvals and permits for the campaign have been sorted with the Lami Town Council and the Ministry of Environment being the key stakeholder of these initiatives.

"Strategic planning in the continuity of the program has been the tower behind this initiative and MVASG has included the program in its corporate plan for 2018, which will see the repetition of the campaign every three months to allow measure and appraisal of the clean-up results for corporate data use for future developments of the municipal under the local government portfolio."
