Cyprus nationals bailed

A STOP departure order has been invoked against two Cyprus nationals facing money laundering charges who were released on bail by the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

Loizos Petridis and Cleanthis Petridis appeared before Magistrate Jioji Boseiwaqa.

The two are charged with 293 counts of money laundering.

They are alleged to have conducted multiple transactions involving 400 foreign cards at BSP ATMs between December 12 and December 19.

The prosecution had earlier objected to bail for the duo on the grounds that the two accused persons were not familiar with their sureties because they had not spent enough time with them.

Magistrate Boseiwaqa also said the two did not have any link to any community or business in Fiji and it was likely they would abscond bail.

The two accused persons had submitted in their application that conditions in the remand centre were poor and they had health issues.

In his ruling, Magistrate Boseiwaqa said he was aware of the task at hand with 293 counts which would involve a lot of work from all the stakeholders to ensure the trial was expedited and the remand centre was not a place to prepare for such cases.

He also said the two accused persons did not have any previous convictions for absconding bail or forfeiture of bail. The duo were released on a $5000 cash bail each and were also ordered to surrender all their travel documents. The two accused persons are represented by Lark Anthony while the State is represented by Saif Shah.
