Women receive funds for project

AN initiative by a women's group to collect 90 kilograms of seedlings for a village reforestation project has been rewarded with funds.

And the mothers of Nasavu Village in the district of Nadi, Bua, now plan to build a bus shelter for their children.

The women yesterday received $930 from the Ministry of Forests for collecting the Fijian logan (dawa) seedlings.

Nasavu Women's Group leader Asinate Qaqabitu said they started collecting the seedlings towards the end of last year.

Ms Qaqabitu said the club decided to construct the bus shelter after seeing children braved the hot sun and rain every day to wait for their rides to school.

"We have other projects lined up this year and this includes the construction of our bread oven so that we can bake and deliver bread to the school and households in the village," she said.

"The 47 women in the village are happy to see this project come to fruition and we cannot wait to see the construction of the bus stop.

"Women in the village are now looking forward to planting trees too if we are given the opportunity."

Briefing the Minister for Forests yesterday, North forestry extension officer Maleli Naikasava said villagers intended to plant 60 hectares of native trees through their Action Against Desertification (AAD) project.

To date, Mr Naikasava said villagers had already planted 1.8 hectares of native trees with funding from the Food and Agriculture Organization.

"They have managed to plant 450 trees through the project so far," he said.

"Through the AAD project, the ministry intends to plant 125 hectares of forests on Vanua Levu.

"Nasavu is part of 10 villages in the country that have implemented the project."
