Update: 12:08PM THE 139 students of Nadi Centre for Special Education will tomorrow have access to their newly constructed three-classroom block, new school furniture and a four-pan toilet block worth $180,000 given by the Japanese government .

A statement by the Japan embassy in Suva today said the assistance under the Grassroot Human Security Projects program, came at a timely manners as the centre's three-classroom wooden building was more than 26 years old and was previously used as staff quarters by the Public Works Department.

"The deteriorating condition of the school building was an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) hazard with rotting floors and walls, leaking roofs and indication of structural failure, particularly felt during strong winds and rainy weather," it said.

"Furthermore, the growing number of students had also resulted in overcrowding, hence creating an environment that was not conducive to teaching and learning."

The successful implementation of the project will directly benefit the 139 students, 16 staff and the centre's management as it will provide a safe, special needs friendly, spacious, teaching and learning environment.
