Global climate

Sachida Nath, Nadi
Friday, February 23, 2018

THE topic of tropical cyclones in your opinion column (FT 17/02) by Dr Sushil Sharma raised the equilibrium factor of global climate.

It is ironical that cyclones help keep Earth habitable, though most do not make a landfall; they do maintain our planet's equilibrium.

Effect of ill winds could result in scores of lives being lost but without them, Earth would heat up around equator beyond human habitation. Nature is double-edged in a sense.

Unfortunately, sometimes prominent politicians try to throw the Earth's equilibrium off.

That is, by making exaggerated pronouncements about extreme weather because of human induced global warming alone.

In 2013, in his State of Union address former US president Barack Obama talked about more severe storms to come and other dire predictions about the weather.

Such pronouncements are to be taken with a pinch of salt.

It is important that we need to become better adapted to lowering cyclone damage.

One way would be to have better building codes and enforcement of such codes.
