Bold and outspoken former television journalist Shanal Sivan, 24, is a candiadate in this year's General Election. The National Federation Party provincial candidate says he will advocate for a reduction on basic food item prices if elected in parliament. He usually shops with his wife Shireen and shared with Times shopper of the week how expensive food was these days.

The couple's shopping list is always prepared by Shireen with specific instructions included in the such as, brands and types of products she wants every fortnight.

Sivan said anything not included in her list was unacceptable. The Christian couple are on a vegan diet this Lent season. Lent is a period of fasting when Christians around the world give up certain habits or make sacrifices up until Easter Sunday. This period lasts 40 days beginning on Ash Wednesday.

"We decided to go vegan this season.

"We had never given up on meat and fish. But with elections this year, I have to be mindful of my health and the 40 days without meat will help us physically and spiritually," he said.
