Lautoka departs for OFC league campaign

THE Vodafone Lautoka FC left the country yesterday with high hopes to make the country proud at the OFC Champions League.

Goalkeeper Beniamino Mateinaqara will lead the Sugar City boys and will be assisted by Dave Radregai which has some notable names such as Ilaitia Tuilau, Osea Vakatalesau, Jone Vesikula, Kavaia Rawaqa, Samuela Drudru, Zibraz Sahib and replacement goalkeeper Sairusi Bokiji to name a few. Lautoka soccer president Abdul Kadar said the players had prepared well for the challenge and would do their best for their fans, family members, the soccer fraternity and the country as a whole.

"This is the third time that Lautoka has qualified for OFC league and we hope it is the third time lucky," he said.

"The first time was in 2010 and second was in 2011. This time around we are very positive even though our pool is not an easy one.

"This year fortunately the format has changed with the introduction of quarter-finals and we are focused in this trip to achieve the quarter-final status.

The players have been training hard and the team spirit is high — so boys keep it that way. The team administrators are also doing their bit to ensure that travel arrangements are in proper order."

Kadar also urged the players to be good ambassadors for the sport.

"I wish to advise the players to ensure that they maintain their best behaviour from here on until we come back as you are not only going to represent the Lautoka district but the country as a whole.

"Not all teams in this country are as fortunate for the opportunity to play in the O'league so please be thankful and maintain the standards."

The side will face Auckland City in their first game on Sunday.
