PINTO Industries in Labasa is finalising its claims against Telecom Fiji Ltd (TFL) which is expected to be paid to the company in due course.

Company's director Shirley Narayan told Minister for Forestry Osea Naiqamu during his tour at the company premises that the fire incident occurred on September 2016.

Ms Narayan said the fire started from the TFL property which is also located at Labasa Town's Vakamasisuasua Industrial Subdivision.

"In September 2016 our small timber processing factory had a fire which started from the Telecom Fiji Ltd property near our factory, causing extensive damages and loss to our factory," she said.

"We have claimed the loss from TFL and they are finalising our claim in due course."

When asked about the total of losses sustained by the company as a result of the fire, the company's managing director Vishal Narayan said they could not reveal the sum as the case was still in court.

Ms Narayan also told Mr Naiqamu that they were using their land affected by climate change to generate employment for the people of Labasa.

"As you saw in Namara today we have secured four lots of state leases which were severely affected by the effects of climate change," she said.

"We are now utilising the affected land for industrial purposes to create employment, utilise our local resources and generate income for families, businesses and the nation as a whole.

"We have started with the purchase of one LT 50 Wood Mizer machine to supplement with shortage of orders.

"However we intend to purchase an LT 70 machine to help speed up our sawmilling and processing."

Ms Narayan had also urged Mr Naiqamu for his support on their application which will be lodged through the Divisional Forestry Officer North's office by the end of this month.

Meanwhile Mr Naiqamu applauded the efforts by the company to expand their business and generate development in the North.
