Driver loses home in fire

Shalen Prasad Sharma could not hold back his tears as he sat from a distance watching firefighters trying their best to save his three-bedroom house at Delainasole settlement in Nasinu yesterday.

Mr Sharma, 48, a bus driver who has been driving for the past 25 years, said he was at work driving when he received the call about his home.

"My aunty from Ba came to visit me on Wednesday; she said she was washing the clothes at the back when she heard loud noises like firecrackers coming from inside the living room," Mr Sharma said.

"She came to check and noticed flames coming from the electric wires.

"That's when the fire started, she tried to run back into the house to save some of the belongings but it was too late."

An emotional Mr Sharma, who has been living at his Delainasole home alone for the past five years, said no words could express how he felt, but to pray from a distance as firefighters struggled to save his house.

"I can't really express my feelings right now, or to say anything, I've lost everything I have long worked for and it only took minutes for it to be destroyed," he said, with tears rolling down his cheeks.

"I have been a bus driver all my life, only God knows how much I've worked to build a home like this. Now it's all gone."

When contacted for a comment yesterday, National Fire Authority chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai said he was aware of the incident but could not comment further because he did not have any details.
