Group foils attack on girl

A RESIDENT of Hercules St in Suva believes every citizen has a part to play in ensuring a safer neighbourhood for all.

Thomas Wong and his family were at home on Tuesday evening when he heard a loud scream of terror near his house.

Mr Wong said he and other tenants dashed downhill into a nearby bush where he saw a young woman shouting for help.

"It was really dark and we tried our best to locate her knowing something worse could have happened to her if we hadn't gone down," he claimed.

According to Mr Wong, this was not the first time unfortunate events had happened in his back yard.

"We are concerned about our area, students come here to smoke after school, people come to drink here, even to an extent where people think this bush is a bedroom," he said.

"I urge relevant authorities to look into this because I've been to the relevant authorities but nothing has been done.

"That girl was lucky because if we had not acted, someone could have been a victim of rape."

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed they were aware of the incident and were investigating it.

"We can only confirm that an investigation is underway, however we are trying to gather more information," Ms Naisoro said.
