FORTY-TWO unemployed youths in Lautoka successfully completed an eight-week training program designed to improve their chances of obtaining work.

The Office Assistance training program was conducted at the University of the South Pacific's Lautoka campus and ended on January 19.

Campus director Dr Pramila Devi said the Youth Employment Network training was made possible through a partnership between the campus and Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprise and Development (FRIEND) with funding from Oxfam Fiji.

During the eight weeks, the youths were taught personnel management skills, communication skills, writing reports and proposals, customer service skills, job seeking skills, administrative skills for office assistant, office ethics, inventory management and records management.

They also learnt the fundamentals of information technology, word processing, internet and email and electronic spreadsheet skills.

Dr Devi added that the youths would soon be placed on a six-week attachment organised by FRIEND.

"USP Lautoka will conduct the assessment and monitoring while the youths are attached with FRIEND and we will provide certification upon successful completion," she said.

"This training will provide a second chance to unemployed youth to get skills and experience during the job attachment and assist them in eventually finding a job."
