Schools to pilot anti-corruption curriculum

SIXTEEN schools from the Western Division will adopt a pilot National Anti-Corruption Curriculum (NACC) this year.

An introductory workshop was organised in Nadi this week to allow teachers to familiarise themselves with the procedures and content associated with the curriculum.

Together with the Education Ministry, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) also launched the second and third pilot phase of the curriculum.

As part of the pilot phase, students from Years 5 to 13 will undergo teaching and learning processes in the classrooms that will promote the development of values-based personality in children.

FICAC's manager corruption prevention Kolora Naliva said education was a tool to prevent crime and corruption.

"I believe that with the absence of corporal punishment in our educational system, the NACC will place more emphasis on values education in the lives of young people. Through the teaching and learning process, it is effective at that level to shape and mould a child's personality and prepare them for the future in order to become ethical leaders."

Teachers were also able to familiarise themselves with the contents of the National Anti-Corruption Resource Manual and the curriculum frameworks.

The new anti-corruption lessons will be incorporated into selected subjects of English, Social Science, Social Studies, Accounting and History. After the pilot phase, the fully-fledged program is expected to be implemented in all schools around the country next year.
