LUISA Tokelaulevu was one of 35 youths who graduated last week with certificates in customer service and basic computer training from the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Suva.

The 28-year-old said she was very fortunate to be part of the training because the two courses would provide youths the basic platform to be integrated into the workforce.

"Most of the youths were new to this program, and knowing about customer service and basic computing skills will help us because these are two important elements in the workforce. Not just the workforce, but it's also about empowering the youths not only to look for jobs but also to be job creators or entrepreneurs," she said.

She said being a mother of three came with its challenges and the training gave her the push she needed to strive for her goals and dream career.

"Last year, I was pursuing my diploma in banking at FNU, but attending this course has encouraged me to further my studies and look for a job."

With half of Fiji's population under the age of 27, Ministry of Youth and Sports director George Francis said: "Young people are at the forefront of change and innovation, and many have the spirit to make things happen.

"They just need to be given the space to excel."

The participants included 31 youths from the Kadavu urban group and four from the Rotuma urban group.

The training was facilitated by the University of the South Pacific's Pacific TAFE program at Walu Bay in Suva.
