Bridge under threat

VILLAGERS of Matailobau in Vunidawa, Naitasiri are concerned the Waima Bridge that links Nairukuruku, Navuniyasi, Taulevu, Delaitoga, Nabena and Matailobau to Vunidawa may soon collapse.

Matailobau Village chairperson Sailasa Nacika said they had been raising this issue with authorities since last August.

"This is the only crossing we use to get to Vunidawa government station, the hospital, school and even to Suva or Nausori," Mr Nacika said.

"We have been raising this issue too to our district representative and no one seemed to be paying attention to our plea.

"If this crossing is gone, our children will face difficulties getting to school, our sick villagers will have a hard time trying to get to the hospital and for us, many of us are farmers, we transport our farming produce over this bridge in order to get to the Nausori or the Suva market."

Mr Nacika said it would only take another heavy rain to get the bridge washed away by floodwaters.

"The side of the bridge had been washed off little by little," he said.

"It's only a matter of time when the whole thing gets washed away by strong currents, we are expecting heavy rain right now, and our only concern is our bridge that connects us to our outside world.

"All we want is for the relevant authorities to step in to fix the bridge before it is too late where it becomes a much bigger work for them.
