Small grant competition

A SMALL grant competition was introduced as part of the TechCamp New Zealand event last month to challenge participants on the knowledge gained from the two-day workshop.

The TechCamp focused on possibilities on the elimination of mosquito-borne diseases.

University of Otago's Division of Health's assistant project manager Sarah Jutel said the small grant competition was to allow participants create ideas on combating vector-borne diseases.

"Following the interactive training sessions, participants worked in their country groups to identify specific challenges they faced in relation to the reduction of mosquito-borne diseases," she said.

"Each group worked in collaboration with trainers and resource people to develop a project solution using new skills and knowledge they had acquired during the TechCamp training sessions.

"These proposals were considered by a panel of judges for the award of four prizes of $NZ5000 ($F7326.94) to support their project implementation."

Ms Jutel said these teams were currently refining their proposals and seeking approval for project implementation from their respective Ministry of Health.

"The winning teams were from Fiji, Tonga, PNG and the Cook Islands," she said.

"Project implementation will be monitored and evaluated over six months and that is from March through August.

"Teams will submit a final report in September and representatives from two successful teams in implementing their projects will be invited to present at the University of Otago Pacific Health Symposium to be held in Dunedin in November."
