Course to address employable options

IT is one of the ways to effectively address employable options for our students when they leave, says Fiji National University (FNU) pro-vice-chancellor Dr Eci Nabalarua.

"And I felt that because the Creative Arts programs are traditionally aligned with the market it was easy to slot in a service course like this," she said.

She made the comment after launching the new entrepreneurial matters course for its Creative Arts and Sports Science departments at the FNU Nasinu campus yesterday.

Dr Nabalarua who had initiated the course, said when their Graphic Arts, Hairdressing, Film and TV, Music and Sports Science students went out with their qualifications, they would have had some coaching and training on entrepreneurship and how to set up small businesses.

"And they can basically combine that know-how with their trades training to come up with a plausible entrepreneurial activity," Dr Nabalarua said.

She said at the end of the course the students were challenged to submit a fully-fledged small business proposal which they had obviously researched and had been coached on throughout the year.

She said the course was in response to the Government's request for higher education institutions to develop programs which focused more on job creation rather than job seeking.

"I think it also goes in line with Government's vision of developing SMEs because they put up a Young Entrepreneurship Scheme where they have this competition for $20,000.

"So this course basically feeds into that because when you have students trained in the trade and then you provide them entrepreneurship coaching the chances of them developing business proposals through this program is very high, so the chance for success is even higher," she said.

She said as part of the training they had also enlisted the services of a group of young business people as mentors.

She said 86 students had originally enrolled for the course but they were expecting the number to end up with about 100.
