NAP meet to advance planning

REPRESENTATIVES from 12 countries are in Nadi this week for the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Global Network meeting.

Facilitated by Fiji's Ministry of Economy and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the event has gathered participants from Benin, Colombia, Fiji, Madagascar, Mexico, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Kiribati and Tuvalu.

According to IISD's director resilience Anne Hammill, the network of individuals and organisations came together to help developing countries in particular to advance national adaptation planning processes.

"What we've done through the global network is establish two groups of countries, about eight to 10 countries in each group, who regularly meet to talk about technical issues and for the first time in Fiji we've brought them together," she said.

Ms Hammill said Fijian representatives at the meeting would benefit from technical training as the country worked to launch its own national adaptation plan process.

"Fiji launched its NAP framework at COP last year and it is now adding the meat to the framework and I think Fiji is going to focus on national level discussions and the needs of the community on the ground.

"So I think there's going to be an extended consultation process in the country over the next few months and the technical discussions taking place are really intended to help move that along and make sure things move as smoothly as possible."
