Village relocation lessons learnt, says Prakash

THERE have been lessons learnt after the relocation of villages in the country, says Economy Ministry director of climate change Nilesh Prakash.

Speaking at the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Global Network meeting in Nadi yesterday, he said Vunidogoloa on Vanua Levu was one of the first communities in the world that was relocated in 2014.

"Four years on, we are still talking about that community, its members are talking about what has happened to them and the village headman is making international appearances and sharing what happened," he said.

"I think the essence of continually monitoring communities is very important. Firstly, we need to understand how we did what we did.

"The Fijian Government is working to finalise its relocation policy and guidelines and the approach we are taking to finalise this is to really capture the experiences and best practices we've learnt in our past experiences."

According to Mr Prakash, one of the areas they needed to better understand was the processes involved in the relocation.

"In Government, there are a number of agencies involved in the process so we need to understand what it cost us to undertake a relocation like that."

"The relocation for Vunidogoloa cost us about $1 million."
