Officials confirm interest in schools rugby league increase

THE interests is growing in rugby league in the county following an increase in prizemoney in this year's Vodafone Fiji Secondary School Rugby League competition which kicks off this weekend.

There has also been an increase in prizemoney for the different grades compared with past years with an increase of 44 per cent. The total amount of sponsorship has increased to $10,700 from $6000.

Fiji Secondary School Rugby League president Iosefo Volau said it was exciting times for secondary school rugby league.

"Fiji Secondary School Rugby League has come a long way as we started with four teams in 2007 and we had 41 teams which competed in last year's competition while this year we have 76 teams," he said.

"We are going to compete in zones of four with 33 teams competing in the south-east zones, 20 Ba, Tavua and Ra zone while 15 teams will compete in Nadi and Lautoka zone. In the Nadroga and Navosa will see eight teams competing in that zone."

The vice-president of the South/ East zone Naisa Cama Toko said the teams would come prepared for the competition.

" We are looking forward to everyone's support with the start of the season on Saturday and we are expecting all pool matches to finish by week 7 (March 1) and there will the zonal semi-finals and grand finals in the following weeks," he said.

"The national quarter-inal will be in week 10 which is before Easter followed by semifinals and finals. The venues are yet to be confirmed."

Prizemoney increase

U15- Runner-up- $700 from $300 in 2017, winner- $1000 from $500 in 2017

U17- Runner-up- $1500 from $700 in 2017, winner- $2000 from $1000 in 2017

U19- Runner-up- $2500 from $1500 in 2017, winner- $3000 from $2000 in 2017
