Case adjourned, man remanded in custody

A MAN who allegedly misappropriated more than $23,000 under the Help for Home initiative has been further remanded by the Magistrates Court in Suva.

Atunaisa Ravatu, who is charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with one count of general dishonesty — causing a loss and two counts of general dishonesty — obtaining a gain, appeared before Magistrate George Waleen yesterday.

It is alleged that Mr Ravatu between May 1, 2016 and November 30, 2016 in Suva dishonestly caused a loss or risk of a loss to the Government of Fiji through the Help for Hope initiative by misappropriating MPAISA cards belonging to villagers of Vuna District in Taveuni amounting to the sum of $22,231.22, knowing that the loss would occur or substantial risk of loss would occur to the Government of Fiji.

It is also alleged that the accused between May 1, 2016 and November 30, 2016 with the intention of dishonestly obtaining a gain acquired $3600 for his personal gain from the 'Cash Back' promotion that was given by Vinod Patel Company Ltd under the Help for Home initiative.

FICAC lawyer Anaseini Lomani informed the court that no cash had been recovered so far. The case has been adjourned to February 12.
