THE new prefects of Labasa Sangam College were encouraged to serve with a deep sense of humility, respect and responsibility.

In addressing the newly-elected prefects at the school yesterday, chief guest and Labasa Magistrate Siainiu F'aalogo Bull said there would be times when students would feel that their hard work was not appreciated or recognised.

A total of 95 school prefects were inducted at the school yesterday.

"It's been so rightly said that few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events," she said.

Mrs Bull said that from numerous diverse acts of courage and belief, human histories were shaped.

"Each time a man stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others or strike out against justice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope," she said.

School head boy Shafin Raza expressed his sincere gratitude towards his teachers and the school board for putting their trust in him.

"To lead is nothing new for me because I have been a primary school prefect and head boy, but I thank my teachers and the school for allowing me to lead the school again this year," he said.

The 18-year-old is the youngest of two siblings and plans to follow in his sister's footsteps of becoming a doctor.

His father, Khalid Hassan, said he was proud to see his son chosen to lead the school.

"I am really proud of his achievements," he said.

Head girl of the school, Shanaya Prasad, said being chosen to lead the school was something she never expected.

"I did not expect to be the head girl of the school, but now being chosen to lead means that I have to lead by example," she said. "Anyone can do anything in life and all we need is hope, determination and courage to serve the purpose of our calling."
