GOVERNMENT will soon invite expressions of interest from specialist doctors overseas to accommodate the shortage of doctors in public health.

This was revealed by the permanent secretary for Ministry of Civil Service, Bernadette Welch.

"We are looking for doctors in all specialties and public health.

"In some specialties, there are more vacancy than others, but we need a lot of public health doctors because we have a lot of medical centres throughout Fiji and we have to put doctors in all of them and subdivisional hospitals," she said.

Ms Welch said the ministry also had shortages of specialists in radiology, pathology and emergency medicine.

"We need a range of specialist doctors in Fiji and now we are advertising internationally to try and bring specialists at all different levels and doctors in public health as well."

She said they were in their fifth round of international advertisement and had been advertising for the vacancies since March last year.

"I have an international recruitment firm that is to find doctors for us all the time.

"We run a process where we open up recruitment, we live it open for six months and people can apply any time within the next six months, we conduct the interviews throughout the process and we wrap it all up and then we immediately open another six month program," she added.
