IN a bid to fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the Nasinu Rugby Football Union (NRFU) is organising a wellness program β€”an hour of Zumba exercise at the Nasinu Town Council multipurpose court this Saturday.

NRFU president Paula Biu said the the Nasinu rugby union had adopted a relevant theme "Fighting NCDs through rugby" to steer the union forward into the coming years. NCDs, according to statistics obtained from the Ministry of Health, is the leading cause of death here in Fiji.

About 80 per cent of deaths are caused by these lifestyle diseases and the number keeps growing.

More than 82 per cent of all deaths attributed to NCDs occur before the age of 60.

"These statistics are very alarming but the solution is very simple β€” change your lifestyle," Biu said.

"We are sticking to this (wellness program) plan, and it is therefore, our honour to again extend our invitation β€” to attend our wellness program for this week, which will be a fun-filled one solid hour of Zumba session, with registrations beginning at 5.30am."

There will be free health screening and counselling by the Ministry of Health officials as well as prizes and refreshments provided at the Ram Sami & Sons sponsored event.

The Zumba session will be conducted by Litiana Miller.

The first wellness event was held on January 20.
