On the radar

FIJI Airways national 7s coach Gareth Baber hasn't ruled out the chance of securing the services of Olympics gold medal winning captain Osea Kolinisau for the Las Vegas 7s tournament.

Baber said he had been in contact with Kolinisau who's now based in the United States.

Baber said winning a tournament was about confirming what you were doing and your plan was working.

"We are all jostling positions in the world series to see where we are at with the big tournaments that are to come," he said.

"You are continually battling with good coaches who are setting up their teams to beat you so it is a great challenge.

"There are four different winners in four tournaments.

"You can see through the tournaments how strong some of the teams are and how they are growing through the tournaments.

"That's exactly how I feel like we did last weekend. We did not do it in the previous tournament.

"We started to but we got stuck. We could not get ourselves going again.

"A lot of that is down to sticking to your plan.

"Making sure that the players are mentally clear on what they are doing for their country."

A big crowd turned up to greet the players upon their arrival from New Zealand on Monday. Baber said it was natural for the fans to respond.

"They want to celebrate with the team," he said.

"They are proud Fijians and when we go overseas we get massive support over there.

"In international sport, if you don't like the decisions, you don't get involved in it.

"I knew that when I was coming here. People said I needed to have a thick skin.

"I'm not taking that lightly. It drives me to work hard.

"I got to stand and lead the players to where they need to go.

"If I seem to shy away then I'm not doing my job properly."
