Health centre 'to cope with numbers'

THE number of patients visiting the Valelevu Health Centre can be managed by the staff at hand, says Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar.

The health centre, which operates 24 hours and seven days a week, serves about 200,000 people who reside along the Suva-Nausori corridor.

Ms Akbar said according to the summary on the number of patients who visited the health centre, about 60-70 patients visited after 10pm.

After concerns raised by this newspaper on the number of staff members serving patients at the health centre, Ms Akbar said: "I've got the number of patients that we have seen over the last two weeks after 10pm and they are not large numbers, they've been accommodated by the existing staff."

She said the shortage of nurses and doctors in Fiji was a continuing issue, but the staff at the Valelevu Health Centre had assured the ministry that they would be able to cater for patients' demand.

During the launch of the 24-hour service at the centre, it was confirmed that seven doctors, 26 nurses and three nursing practitioners would be stationed there.
