Hard drug 'circulated in jails'

THE Fiji Police Force is investigating a few cases where methamphetamine was found being circulated in Fiji Corrections Service facilities in the country.

This was confirmed by Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho, who said police had confirmed there was a methamphetamine market in Fiji and inmates were not spared when it came to the use of hard drugs.

Brig-Gen Qiliho said police were aware of the fact that hard drugs were being sold in high-end nightclubs and circulated in low-end nightclubs.

"There is a meth market out there. That's what we are working on when I say the fight against drugs, it's not the fight against marijuana only. It's the fight against the green and white drugs, meth is out there," Brig-Gen Qiliho said.

"People are not talking about it. It's being pushed in the high-end nightclubs in Suva and even the low-end nightclubs.

"It is being infiltrated even into corrections facilities. We have investigated some cases."

Brig-Gen Qiliho said police were working closely with counterparts in Australia and New Zealand in the areas of intercepting drugs.

"We are worried about the strain it will bring to the health system, as well as the economy and people who are supposed to be productive will be zombies and unproductive. The effects of that is a worrying factor and that's why we are upping our game in our fight against drugs," he said.

"The effects of meth, we had a look at our neighbours Australia and New Zealand and they are fighting that as well. Meth is much more addictive and the effects are much worse."
