Association decries illegal operators

THE Fiji Taxi Association has raised its concerns to relevant authorities on the increase in illegal taxi operators in Nausori.

This was raised by association secretary general Rishi Ram in a statement they had sent to the Fiji Police Force.

"A number of private and rental cars are operating as taxis and nothing has been done to combat this problem as this has escalated throughout Fiji which now is beyond control," the statement read.

The association questioned the relevant authorities as to why they had not been vigilant in their efforts to stop this practice after a number of private cars were caught in Nausori operating with taxi meters.

Mr Ram revealed in the statement that the association had been raising their concerns on these illegal operations for more than two decades now.

"Fiji Taxi Association has been embarking on these illegal operations for more than two decades now where this has gone on deaf ears and has not been addressed," the statement said.

A statement from the Fiji Police Force had stated the issue of illegal operators was not a major concern and national traffic operations were in progress.

"The national traffic operation Tatarovi is currently underway and one of the focus areas is on illegal operators.

"The Nausori area as highlighted has not seen an increase in illegal operators as our officers have been strictly enforcing the issue during this operation."

The police are urging the association to contact them if they have any concerns as their doors had always been open.

Questions sent to the Land Transport Authority yesterday remained unanswered when this edition went to press.
