RESIDENTS of Bulileka, Boubale and Urata in Labasa waded across flood waters as they tried to get home yesterday.

Heavy downpour experienced in the North since the weekend has caused flash flooding in low-lying areas of Macuata.

Police called on members of the public to be cautious as reports of flash floods were reported in various areas.

Spokesperson Ana Naisoro said this was imperative and the public were to stay safe and adopt the necessary safety measures in light of flash flooding in some areas.

" ... the following roads are under water: Siberia road, which is only accesible to 4x4 vehicles, Nagigi Flats which has half the road flooded, Urata, Boubale and Dreketilailai bridge which is not accessible to all traffic and Wainikoro flats is still flooded," she said.

Boubale resident Alipate Vosabula said flooded bridges and portions of other roads on those areas had become normal for them and at the same time, a huge worry to residents.

"This portion of the road always submerges during the slightest rain and this is the time we always warn our children to stay indoors," he said.

Mr Vosabula said a few of his children had to return home after they saw the roads were under water.

"I have always reminded my children not to cross flooded roads at any time and that's exactly what they did," he said.

"They stayed home and did not go to school and it's really scary to try and cross strong currents because anything can happen."

Another resident, Shiv Kumar, has five children and they attend Bulieka Primary School and Bulileka Sanatan College.

"I just can't send them to school during this weather, especially when the roads are flooded," he said.

"Their safety is important to me and keeping them at home is what I will do and they can return to school when the water goes down."
