Ministry to engage retired midwives

THE Makoi Maternity Unit will be the first low risk maternity unit in the country to re-engage the service of retired midwives, says Minister for Health and Medical Services, Rosy Akbar.

Ms Akbar said the unit was scheduled to open by February 16.

She said once the unit opened, it would service the public from 8am to 4pm.

Thus, she said, from April, the ministry planned to ensure services at the unit to be offered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"One of the reasons of that is because it's a low risk maternity hospital,we are looking for midwives so by end of March we should be finalising our recruitment program for midwives and so that will allow us to open it as a 24-hour centre by April," Ms Akbar said.

"We are trying to bring back those retired midwives because we believe they have the experience for the job and they will also be training nurses into midwifery so Makoi will be the first to engage retired midwives."

The ministry was allocated $5.5 million for the construction of the 10-bed unit.
