Patriot of the country

FIJI Airways Fiji 7s captain Jerry Tuwai is a patriot of the country.

He set aside personal emotions to fully commit to Fiji's campaign in the second leg of the World Rugby HBSC Sevens Series in Sydney and Hamilton.

The 28-year-old lost his grandfather before the tournaments and had to attend to his sick son.

He missed one week of training and many critics questioned the credibility of his leadership role, however Jerry certainly delivered with the team on Sunday claiming the gold medal in a come-from-behind 24-17 victory against South Africa.

Jerry said with four more tournaments to go, they were in the right place to come out on top at the end.

"We will try our best to come out on top," he said.

"There is a lot of hard work to be done. We are trying to put the best combinations together that can perform consistently for the Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup 7s.

"My grandfather passed away before the tournaments and my son got very sick. I missed one week of training. I looked up to the Lord and controlled things mentally.

"The bigger thing is playing for Fiji. I put all the emotions aside and did everything for the country."
