Waqavou saves day for Delta Tigers

REWA goalkeeper Benito Waqavou saved the day for Rewa in their nil-all draw against Nadi during the Vodafone Premier League match at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori on Sunday.

Waqavou made the starting line-up after Rewa's regular goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau applied for his release to join Suva with Tevita Waranivalu and Savenaca Nakalevu.

Waqavou made a number of daring saves in the match with Nadi strikers Ruisate Matarerega and Napolioni Qasevakatini taking a number of heavy shots at the Rewa goalmouth. But the brilliant and daring Waqavou stood firm and even got injured while making one on one saves against Matarerega.

Rewa had the services of former Suva striker Setareki Hughes, Ba defender Josefata Neibuli and Lautoka's Siotame Kubu who played their first match for the Delta Tigers.

Hughes' best attempt came in the first half when he was denied by the cross bar.

"There was no clarity in whichever team wanted to win, but Nadi had some intentions to score goals," Rewa coach Marika Rodu said.

"We had some ball possessions but we did not transfer it into attempts at Nadi's goalmouth —that was our downfall.

Nadi president Javed Ahmed said Nadi would work on their weaknesses.

"Our second half performance was very good, but we also missed those chances which could have been converted into goals," Ahmed said.

"We are still early into the season and we also had two weeks of break which did not help.

"We will need to work on our finishing before we play Labasa and Dreketi in Labasa."
