THE University of the South Pacific invested about $40 million to build two campuses in other Pacific Island nations.

Vice-chancellor and president of USP Professor Rajesh Chandra said $US3.6m ($F7.3m) was used to construct the new Kiribati Island Campus.

"The construction of the new Solomon Island campus will start this year with investment of $US16.9m ($F34m)," he said.

"Significant investment has been done in new student accommodations at the Laucala campus in Suva and more is planned.

"We had review of institutional quality, administration and academic programs with numerous high commendations and any recommendations made in the reports have been attended to as part of our culture of continuous improvement."

The development partner confidence, Prof Chandra said had increased significantly especially with New Zealand and Australia.

The annual aid, he added now valued at about $52m.

"The university in the last five years under the 2013 to 2018 Strategic Plan has made many strides to achieve excellence," Prof Chandra said.

"One of the priority areas is regional and community engagement where the focus is to further invest in enhancing and expanding its campuses and strengthen partnerships with stakeholders, governments, industry and communities."
