Need for intergrated frameworks

ALL international frameworks launched to create a more resilient society needs integration and cohesion, says Agriculture Minister Inia Seruiratu.

Mr Seruiratu made this comment while speaking at the fourth Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union media summit on climate change and dsaster risk reduction at the Sheraton Fiji Resort yesterday.

He said 2015 was a landmark year in terms of international agreement on actions for a resilient society and a secure and sustainable planet.

"Three international frameworks were put in place — the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 in March, the Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 in September and the Paris Agreement in December," he said.

"It is clear that actions under the three frameworks are intrinsically linked and, when planned properly, the actions will benefit each other.

"Therefore, all frameworks call for integration and coherence among the three."

He said in the Pacific, a Framework for Resilient Development in the Pacific was established, which provided high-level strategic guidance to different stakeholder groups on enhancing resilience to climate change and disasters.

"A guiding principle of the framework is to incorporate risk resilient development across all sectors and the importance of participatory people-centred approaches for enhanced preparedness and response, risk reduction and adaptation initiatives."

According to Mr Seruiratu, a 2017 World Risk Report that assessed a country's natural disaster risk for the period 2012 to 2016 listed Vanuatu as the country with the highest level of risk in the world.

"Tonga followed in second place, Solomon Islands in sixth, PNG eleventh and Fiji fifteenth."
