Shift to evac centre

RESIDENTS of Bouma squatter settlement in Labasa started shifting to their evacuation centre yesterday after a flood warning was issued for the nation.

The evacuation centre caters for seven to eight families within the settlement.

Asesela Nasea, a resident, said they lived in a flood-prone area beside the Labasa River and they had to be proactive.

"This is that time of the year when we are always alert because it's mostly known as the cyclone season and continuous rain leads to floods," he said.

Mr Nasea said they experienced bad days during rainy weather in which their children returned from school wading through floodwaters in the settlement.

"We have always reminded parents in our settlement to take care of their children and to always bring them home after school," he said.

"Our evacuation centre is built to keep us safe from strong wind and floods."

Another resident, Saimoni Tuliga, said they started their preparations as early as January because of the wet months ahead.

"We have grown used to the flooding issues in our area and the main sign of our preparation is the evacuation centre," he said.

"Our preparation led up to the fact that we even charged our solar lights the whole of last week so we could have lights at the centre."

The heavy rain and flash flood warnings in force for most of Fiji remain in place, the latest weather bulletin issued this past hour confirms.

In its weather bulletin, Fiji Meteorological Service said the warning for western and northern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau Group, Yasawa Group, Mamanuca Group, Kadavu and its nearby smaller islands remained in force.
